“Welcome to Agrabah, the City of Enchantment, where every beggar has a story and every camel has a tail!” In late March, Glenholme’s Center for the Arts was transformed into the mythical Arabian kingdom of Agrabah for two performances of Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.,” the classic tale of a young street urchin who finds a magic lamp on his quest for true love.

The title role of Aladdin was portrayed by a Glenholme student with delightful charm and an incredible voice. Helping him win princess Jasmine’s heart was the Genie, who artfully led the show-stopping ensemble number, “Prince Ali.” While one student made use of his deep voice to convincingly portray Aladdin’s nemesis, the ever sinister and frightful Jafar, another student, donning an over-the-top red and orange costume, provided comedic relief as Iago, Jafar’s side-kick parrot. Other notable performances included Jasmine, the Sultan, the Magic Carpet, the three princes, and the narrators, who kept the audience engaged and the plot moving forward. Beautifully accenting the performance were vibrant, airy costumes, colorful sets, and magical lighting effects.

The Arts program at Glenholme allows students with special needs to share their talents, to develop confidence in their abilities, and to take chances in a safe and supportive environment, where their creative efforts and successes are genuinely celebrated.

Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, with an adapted book and additional lyrics provided by Jim Luigs, and music adapted and arranged by Bryan Louiselle. The musical is based on the 1992 animated Disney film, Aladdin.

When Glenholme student Noah stepped in as Head of School on Thursday, March 29, the magnanimous leader was fully prepared to take on the challenges of his new role. After all, Head of School is not a career choice for the faint of heart; it requires patience, tact, grace, a sense of humor, and a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. At morning assembly, students and staff were greeted by just such a leader. Noah, who was well versed in the demands of Head of School, had big plans for the day and was eager to share them with the student body.

Noah first used his new powers to override the dress code, allowing students to wear comfortable Glenholme T-shirts, sneakers, and hats to school. He then announced that the students would be treated to a special lunch – a buffet of pastas, sauces, and meatballs, accompanied by salad, garlic bread, soda, and an ice cream dessert. Most importantly, Noah proclaimed that there would be NO HOMEWORK that night! Naturally, this news was met with excited cheers and applause.

After a morning of announcing his executive orders, it was down to business for the new Head of School. With a particularly full agenda, Noah reviewed his to-do list and managed important phone calls from his new office. Then, he hopped into his executive golf cart, and was chauffeured around campus by his loyal staff. While making his rounds, he checked on the facilities, dropped in on numerous meetings, made surprise classroom visits, held a working meeting with a student in the Commons, walked the schoolhouse’s prized canine, Toby, and even found time to have lunch with some friends. All the while, Noah ensured that students and staff were happy and productive under his watch. He exercised authority with a sociable smile, a gentle hand, and generous helping of humor at just the right times. It was a great day for all!

Head of School for a Day, the most coveted Parents’ Weekend auction item, allows a student to take charge of the entire Glenholme campus for one full day. The winner of this much sought-after position gets to set rules, attend meetings, manage appointments, choose menus, plan activities, and use the prized executive golf cart. As this year’s Parents’ Weekend quickly approaches, everyone excitedly awaits the announcement of the next Head of School!

Hippity, hoppity, hop! If it’s a bunny you want, Glenholme’s the spot! Each spring, The Glenholme School invites local families to campus to meet the Glenholme Hare and partake in a variety of fun, kid-friendly activities, with the suggested donation of a non-perishable food item. This year’s Spring Hunt, held on Saturday, April 7, resulted in the biggest turnout of the event’s eighteen year history. While enjoying the early spring weather, young children and parents took snapshots with the guest of honor, crafted their own bags, played games, and treated themselves to some delicious refreshments.

Shortly after 11:00 AM, the excited children made a wondrous dash for the spring eggs hidden throughout the campus gardens and fields. Afterwards, the happy hunters counted their treats, traded them for treasures, and returned to the activity tables for more crafts, face painting, and fun. After the many smiling faces departed from the school’s grounds, Glenholme students were left with the satisfaction of another highly successful community event and an abundance of canned items for donation to a local charity.

A time-honored tradition since 1995, the Spring Hunt provides the ideal opportunity for Glenholme students to interact with local families while earning credits in the school’s Community Service Program. Weeks before the special day, students devote their time to clearing the gardens and fields, filling the thousands of eggs, painting posters, and arranging craft projects. Through volunteer work, Glenholme students practice the positive values of caring, respect, responsibility, and community service, while improving their social skills, developing new perspectives, increasing their self-esteem, and building lasting friendships.

Happy Spring!

This February and March, the Glenholme Student Council sponsored a campus event to provide hope to individuals with cancer and to help fight for a cure. In conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days program, the Student Council raised over $1,000 by selling flowers, plants, and stuffed bears to staff, which were delivered to campus by Daffy-dillies on Tuesday, March 20. The Glenholme Student Council saw the Daffodil Days event as their chance to fight back against cancer by raising funds and awareness, and to honor a beloved teacher who continues to battle the disease.

Folders and files and labels, oh my! When faced with a color-coded, multi-pocket filing system, one cannot help but feel optimistic about getting organized. During a seminar for faculty and staff at The Glenholme School, Donna Goldberg, author and founder of “The Organized Student,” explained how a basic set of organizing tools can have a huge impact on a student’s level of success – in school and beyond. Donna showed Glenholme faculty and staff how to help students make their way from disorganized to organized with a positive attitude, a new pack of highlighters, and a plan.

Donna has tremendous experience to draw upon: she is a former librarian, serves on the NY Chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers Board of Directors, and has volunteered her services to the National Center of Learning Disabilities. She understands the strategies for organization as they apply to the structure of schools, the expectations of teachers, and most importantly, the habits of students – even students with special needs.

If the goal is to start students off on the right foot, the Tuesday, March 20 seminar was a big step in the right direction. During her presentation, Donna discussed various organizational systems and the importance of helping each student determine which system works best for him or her. She also covered a number of teaching techniques, including time management, the course syllabus, technology integration, and organization in the classroom.

For parents, “The Organized Student” offers an assortment of sensible solutions for everyday organizational challenges, including strategies for getting the most out of a backpack, a notebook, an at-home desk, or an on-the-go office. Donna explains how children can benefit from a good planner, shares strategies for tackling projects, and offers outlines for managing after-school activities and special events.

Since its inception, “The Organized Student” has been featured on CNBC, CNN, Good Morning America, and The Today Show, as well as in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Parents magazine. Receiving countless rave reviews, “The Organized Student” is recommended for anyone who is interested in helping students develop strategies for success.

Clad in various hues of green, students of The Glenholme School celebrated St Patrick’s Day on March 15, 2012 with a customary meal of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, Irish soda bread, and dessert. After a student DJ provided lively Irish music to help the crowd work up a hearty appetite, an Irish staff member spoke a few traditional words of thanks. While students and staff enjoyed the feast, they took part in a trivia contest that tested their knowledge of Ireland and the holiday’s history, with everyone learning a great deal from the conversations that ensued.

While it may be a new celebration for Glenholme, St Patrick’s Day has been an official holiday in Ireland for over a century, and in the United States since the mid-1990s. In addition to the US and Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is currently celebrated in Canada, Japan, Singapore, Russia, and Australia. Holiday festivities, such as the St. Patrick’s Day Social, foster a sense of school spirit and community while helping Glenholme students develop an appreciation for other cultures and individuals. At these on-campus social events, students enjoy time with their friends in a fun, safe, and supportive environment.

Thanks to the luck o’ the Irish, the first St. Patrick’s Day Social was a wonderful success!

In a Jeopardy-style event, two teams of horse-savvy students competed for the Glenholme Equestrian Trophy during the Second Annual Equestrian Knowledge Bowl on March 1, 2012. This fast-paced, 50-minute, beat-the-buzzer competition challenged the teams to correctly answer each question in front of an enthusiastic audience of students and staff within a mere 20-second time frame.

While the Fillies were confident in their answers - making only a few errors during the challenge, the Colts were quick to the buzzer - a distinct advantage in such a fast paced race. After an impressive display of knowledge by both teams, the Colts trotted off as champions for the second straight year. They will be honored with a special display in the Glenholme Horse Barn, next to the prized Equestrian Trophy.

Team building events, such as the Equestrian Knowledge Bowl, foster confidence, improved self-esteem, and sportsmanship amongst peers and staff. The next quest for the Equestrian Trophy promises to be another exciting competition!

During the March Weekend Arts Incentive, Glenholme students were treated to a two-day workshop in stand-up comedy by acclaimed comedian Kevin Flynn. After spending three years as a professional soccer player in the MISL (and winning Rookie of the Year his first year), Mr. Flynn went on to host the World Cup for Fox Sports, ESPN, and ABC. He then began doing stand-up, winning the Boston Comedy Riot in 1988 and performing on NBC’s “Friday Night Videos,” A&E’s “Evening at the Improv,” and Canada’s “Open Mike.” In addition to guest starring on NBC’s “Law & Order” and hosting “Go For It” on the Discovery Channel, Mr. Flynn has appeared in numerous major films, such as “Me, Myself & Irene” with Jim Carrey, “The Heartbreak Kid” with Ben Stiller, and the blockbuster animated film “Osmosis Jones” with Chris Rock. He is currently the star of HGTV’s “Ultimate Collectors.”

During the workshop, students learned how to take a funny personal experience (such as a baptism gone wrong or a family cat ruining Christmas dinner) and shape it into a masterful piece of comic art. Students shared fun-filled, quirky, and heart warming stories, examined the psychology of humor, and practiced the subtleties of pace and timing. The weekend culminated in each student presenting a very polished two minute stand-up comedy set!

By participating in a program such as the Arts Incentive, students expand their skills, liberate their imaginations, increase their self-esteem, and learn positive methods of expression. Active involvement in the Arts stimulates Glenholme students’ personal growth, helps them to develop an appreciation for others, and allows them to take healthy risks in a safe and supportive environment. The Glenholme School aims to grow the Arts Incentive program and provide students with an eclectic series of on-campus weekend workshops covering all areas of the Arts.

The Glenholme School varsity basketball team was all smiles as they celebrated a decisive victory over Maplebrook School on February 16 in the Glenholme gymnasium. Although Maplebrook had raced out to a 13-2 lead, the Grizzlies clawed their way back with a strong defense, solid rebounding, and some great baskets, resulting in a 53-42 victory.

As the match marked the final home game of the season, the team also celebrated the Glenholme seniors and their dedication to the basketball program. Recognizing the three senior players, Coach Kepics noted, “Our seniors play an important role in our program. I am very proud of these guys for what they have accomplished.” The Senior Night celebration was made complete by the Men’s Singing Group performing the National Anthem and the Spirit Squad providing an incredible half-time show and constant cheers from the sidelines.

The interscholastic sports program at Glenholme fosters health and wellness, while building school spirit, teamwork, and strong friendships. By actively participating in competitive sports, students learn the importance of hard work and become more confident in their own abilities.

The Grizzlies bounced back after a series of hard-fought losses to bring their record to 5-5-0 with one game left in the season. Congratulations to the senior players, and go Grizzlies!
